Laika, a stray mongrel from the streets of Moscow, embarked on a journey aboard the Sputnik 2 spacecraft, launched into low Earth orbit on November 3, 1957. Given the absence of technology to de-orbit at the time, Laika's survival was never anticipated. She tragically succumbed to overheating during the spacecraft's fourth orbit.
